John Coltrane's drummer from the 60's Rashied Ali dead at age 74.

First Elvin, now Rashied. They will be missed. Never got a chance to see Rashied, but saw Elvin a couple of times. What a class act. After the third encore, the group ran out of material, so Elvin started handing out drum sticks to the crowd, humbled by the overwhelming response. What a sweetheart.

Wish I had gotten the chamce to see Rashied.

words that immediately come to mind when I think of Rashied are kind
and generous. He strongly believed in maintaining the integrity of the
music and in its ability to cleanse and heal those who would listen. He
understood the power of music to shape our attitudes toward life. His
desire to be a force for good prevented him from playing music that
stirred destructive impulses in the listener in exchange for financial
reward. Instead, he provided the rhythms that freed the spirit to love
and live in a space of true contentment. I will miss him dearly.

Yes a sad day and a hugh loss for us all. I still remember the duo lp he did with Coltrane called Interstellar Space. Great, great music.
