JL Sargent
I bought 3 of the tapes listed in the Ebay auction below to try out with my machine (Ampex ATR-700). Yes, its a crap shoot I suspect. Tape condition unknown, tape bias who knows, etc. But I figured for $20 bucks including shipping for the 3 loaded reels it was worth the gamble! The recommended tape for my machine is the AMPEX 456 Grand Master but I have read in previous threads that these tapes suffer from physical ailments. I undersand that 406 is also a good choice, but where to get? Anybody bought tapes like these off Ebay with any success? http://cgi.ebay.com/Audiotape-1-4-audio-tape-on-10-5-Metal-Reel-buy-1-100_W0QQitemZ160364100843QQcmdZViewItemQQptZBI_Blank_Media?hash=item255671fceb&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Marvel
Bias won't matter fro playback, only for recording. In the U.S. you can get brand new: http://www.atrtape.com/ (specs for this tape on thier site, and bias settings for different recorders) http://www.rmgi-usa.com/index.html RMGI is the European EMTEC tape. RMGI bought the EMTEC/BASF formulas and manufacturing BASF equiv. tape. I thought that Quantegy (who was doing the original Ampex 456 tapes, etc.) is now out of business. THis place says they have tape: http://www.malelo.com/recording-media-pro-audio-tape.html Bruce
JL Sargent
Thanks for that Bruce. Gets me going in the right direction. On those Ebay tapes, I hope to not only verify the machine will play those tapes but I also hope to erase and record on them.
