dead sub-10 - blowing the external fuse

Recommended Posts

I recently acquired a used sub 10 which worked great with my quintet II"s and a Denon receiver.

Yesterday it was dead.

No blue light on the front.

I checked the external fuse - it was blown.

I bought the recommended radioshack 2A 250V slow blow fuses (pack of 4 ). On flipping the sub 10 power switch on it promptly blows the new fuse (no blue light, nothing).

Any suggestions?? Any other simple stuff to check?

TIA for yr replies

Peter

this is not a solution or suggestion but an additional querry...likewise its what is also happening to my sub 10 which i purchased from germany two weeks ago (November 25,2009) it is in the two years warranty period but it cost me more sending it back to germany and back to me again (i live here in italy )i opened the amplifier but there are no burnt or suspecious parts in question. i just wonder why klipsch has'nt act and address to this particular problem with the fact that it exist even before the first manufacturing batch. now i really regreted buying this worst product on its category (with the fact that browsing in the web you'll find so many feedbacks and comments regarding this particular product) i should have bought B & W ASW 608. and i will never recommend this product to anybody.

I am in the USA

I contacted Klipsh Customer/Tech service in the USA . They diagnosed the problem as a dead/ fried amplifier.

I bought my unit second hand - not under warranty, so no help there.

They gave me two options

1. Send them my amplifier (under return goods authorization) - for $60 they send me a refurbished amp with a 3 month factory warranty

2. Buy a new amplifier from them for $160 with a 2 year warranty (I think it was 2 years)

I went for option 1. The amplifier is easy to remove - just the larger philips head screws round the outside of the amp plate (maybe 8??) then disconnect 2 speaker connection wires with spade type connectors (I took photos of which one went where) and a small plug-in connector (may have to scrape off some glue to get it to separate). NOTE: UNPLUG IT FIRST!! IF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHAT YOU ARE DOING CALL KLIPSCH TECH SERVICE!!!

Amp is not too heavy, and fits in a US priority mail medium box - cost about $14 to send with tracking and $200 insurance.

So - maybe ask Klipsch if you can send them just the amplifier!!!

I will see how it goes. Sent it out Dec 12 2009. Downside is 3-6 weeks quoted as time to receive replacement amp. That is too long. Klipsch need to learn from the computer people - send out the replacement part immediate, and if Klipsch do not get the old part back from you in xx days, charge you the full amount. I would have no problem with that.

Sorry for the delay in response.

I was impressed with the speed of response on the refurbished amp - I had it back from Klipsch in about 10 days.

Re-installation was fairly easy.

Klipsch included the red+black connector wires to the speaker, plus the three wire (blue/white) LED light assembly already connected to the amp board.

I had disconnected the originals from the amp board in order to get the amp out. To use the new leads would have meant removing the speaker to access the terminals and free up the LED + wires, so I disconnected the new ones from the board and reconnected the existing ones (meant scraping some glue off the three wire terminal on the board to remove the new LED wire, but no real issues.).

I also went out and bought a new dedicated Monster surge suppressor for the sub, and a 25ft Monster THX certified subwoofer cable (which was about another $60). I am taking no chances on frying this amp!!

Anyway, got it connected up and its working fine so far. Soundwise, the sub blends very well with the Quintet II 's I have. We watched Terminator - Salvation the other night - sound was great, plus it gets a serious work out on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II via the PS3.

I have a Denon receiver with the Audessey auto set-up. The Audessey was not recognizing the sub with the sub set to AUTO. With the sub powered up before switching on the Denon (and AUTO set to OFF on the sub), the Audessey then recognized the sub and it went through the set-up fine.

So the message is: "so far, so good". No complaints about the Klipsch service.
