cap quandry

HiYaAll,

I've got a pair of CW's I.5's w/B2 xover. Recently I replaced the oil can caps w/BEC Sonic's.

Today I checked DCR ESR of the old caps and they check out purrfect. < .10 ohm,- the lowest the meter would read, no leaks or flaws.

My point is that these appear to be military grade and some are probably being replaced when they don't need to be.

I believe I have a great set. circa 1983. Not sure how they can dry out iffin the can is intact? They do look pretty industrial like starter caps and given the low stress from a speaker they're probably not worn from that perspective. The Sonicap sound is similar from what I can tell. Too bad we don't have ESR meter for members to share and pass on. Testing takes less then 5 minutes. I called a Mac dealer on unrelated and he wanted $45 to test the caps that were off the board.. yeah right. lol

That one is extreme, but no where near the worst I have seen. Something over 300 ohms ESR was the worst I have seen. But the take home point from this is that most of the worst ones I have seen were not leaking, still sealed good. Whatever happens to them internally to raise ESR is not necessarily related to staying sealed.

Typical 30 year old oil filled can type cap tests very close on capacitance and around 0.5 ohms ESR.
