lucky5115
HiYaAll, I've got a pair of CW's I.5's w/B2 xover. Recently I replaced the oil can caps w/BEC Sonic's. Today I checked DCR ESR of the old caps and they check out purrfect. < .10 ohm,- the lowest the meter would read, no leaks or flaws. My point is that these appear to be military grade and some are probably being replaced when they don't need to be. ronnie
Groomlakearea51
Generally the old "Aerovox" cans are pretty much dried out. You may actually have a good set. I had one good set from a pair of Heresy's one time. The question is do the CW's sound better with the new caps than they did with the old can caps? lucky5115
I believe I have a great set. circa 1983. Not sure how they can dry out iffin the can is intact? They do look pretty industrial like starter caps and given the low stress from a speaker they're probably not worn from that perspective. The Sonicap sound is similar from what I can tell. Too bad we don't have ESR meter for members to share and pass on. Testing takes less then 5 minutes. I called a Mac dealer on unrelated and he wanted $45 to test the caps that were off the board.. yeah right. lol ronnie
BEC
Best I have seen one of those old caps test for ESR is about 0.3 ohms. I would suspect that your meter is not telling you the truth. Bob Crites
lucky5115
I used this meter. The lowest it goes is .10 ohm on the scale. Tested twice; that's were it was. ronnie
BEC
I use this meter. Bob Crites
DanO55
Would you consider the ESR of the one in the picture "typical" or extreme? TY
BEC
That one is extreme, but no where near the worst I have seen. Something over 300 ohms ESR was the worst I have seen. But the take home point from this is that most of the worst ones I have seen were not leaking, still sealed good. Whatever happens to them internally to raise ESR is not necessarily related to staying sealed. Typical 30 year old oil filled can type cap tests very close on capacitance and around 0.5 ohms ESR. djk
"Whatever happens to them internally to raise ESR is not necessarily related to staying sealed. " Internal lead attachment to capacitor plates fails.
