So, I am wanting to look into a home theatre speakers set. I want at least 5.1. I know there is now 7.1 or something like that. That too would be cool. What would you all suggest? If the $1000 figure allocated for speakers only? Do you want floorstanding speakers or bookshelves? Do you have a receiver or preamp now that you'll use,or are you planning to buy that too? I was figuring on splitting it between a receiver and speakers. A receiver only if I need one. If I do, I was thinking about going with the AVR 520 As far as the room, well, it could't be more less home theater friendly. The only place where I can put my TV is along one wall. (I tried to do a layout of the room using dashes and pipe symbols, but the app removed all extra white spaces. decibel man Posted April 11, 2002 Share Posted April 11, 2002 Moon, the HK520 is a very good choice, I have the HK7000 (the former big brother to the 520). I do think you would be better of with the 320 if you are serious about Klipsch speakers. The HK receivers have a ton of current, so there isn't a whole lot of need for high wattage when paired with Klipsch speakers. Most of the Klipsch lines are very effiecient when it comes to sensitivity (they can play loud with very little power). The feature set isn't all that huge between the 520 and the 320 and you will definitely save some bucks. I would of coarse suggest the RF-3II, RC-3II, and the RS-3II. With your budget you may have to wait a while for a subwoofer, but you will still want to have one eventually. If you can't afford the whole system then just get a good set of mains for now, like the RF-5's. Two channel with Klipsch is better than surround with Bose or a number of other very popular brands. You may want to watch EBay for some nice used Klipsch speakers. If you do not feel the need for a warranty, you may want to look at different internet dealers. They cannot offer a warranty, as Klipsch does not honor "out of area" internet sales. The rule of thumb I tell my friends when they ask me to go with them to look for a system is: find a price you are comfortable with and then double it. This prevents the 8 to 12 month, I should'ves. I should have spent a little more and got the better speakers or I should have just got the mains and added the rest later. In my case, I should've got the HK500 as the HK7000 barely gets any exercise with the Klipsch speakers. Durring most soundtrack and music playback the Klipsch speakers probably only use 3 to 6 watts (except for deep bass dynamics) of the 100 watts that are available from my HK. Sounds like a great system. I just put it together at www.goodguys.com. They have the RSW-10 Subwoofer , the RS-3II Surround Speakers , the RF-3II Floorstanding Loudspeakers and lastly the RC-3II Center Channel Speaker ... All for a nice price of $2374.96. OUCH! But I am sure it's worth it. Oh man, drool city. So is Klipsch really better than Bose? There are great benifits to the Bose Accostamas System. They are really good small speakers. SMALL being the key word. The unfornate thing for Bose is you can get small speaker that also sound great (like the Klipsch) for maybe half the price. YOU have to compare them relativly. You can not compare the Bose satalite to the REFERENCE line. Its like comparing a Ford Escort to a Toyota Avalon. I, however, did the try the Bose. They were not for me. I returned them and went for Klipsch. As decibel man said, spend more than you expect. I really don't have any friends that come over that have anything that resemble a home theater. So, anyting I would get would blow them away. See, I am a computer geek, actually a software engineer. Most my friends are too. Thus we usually spend our money on PC's and what not. Are you getting them from an actual Klipsch dealer? I not sure what the current prices are, but when I got by Rf-3s, they were 899. Absolutely demo them before hand. You don't know what your getting until you hear them. Everyone hears sound differently and have different taste. You may get them and hate them. Then what? DO NOT buy hasty. I wasted a lot of money doing that in the past. I am telling you from experience, purchase from a respectable dealer that will allow you to try (30 day return policy) them in your own home. Keep returning them until you are absolutely sure you found what you want. Another thing to consider: they may sound like crap in your room! Yes I am being harsh, but you are better off spending a little more now and being happy, then buying something you are not happy with and stuck with. Spend time listening. However, I fear that I will listen to them and turn to mush, fall in love and buy them regardless becuase I really don't know what to listen for. I don't have anything to compair it to other than going to the local theatre that has a nice sytem in it. Will it sound that good? Or do I need to whip out about an extra $30000.00? To answer your question about a Klipsch dealer, well, I doubt it. But they seem very credible. They have 26 years in the business. Your home theater is much smaller so you don't need as much. Your question about what to look for.... Compare many models BRING YOUR OWN MUSIC--you know your music and you can compare it that way Listen very closely Do it yourself--don't just let the sales do everything. Spend a lot of time Listen at different levels On more thing. Put the receiver on CD (or whatever). Stop the source and turn the volume up very high. Make sure not to turn on the source. You may hear a lot of noise. Advice--Klipsch speaker are efficient and WILL pick that up. It will become VERY annoying when you are home. For example-- I started with Sony. Sony is known for noisy receivers. After having it in my house for a month, it started to drive me crazy. I returned and have been very happy. Remember not all speakers sound good with all receivers!!
