Vanns has some nice deals on the Onkyo's. The TXSR-708 is priced at $550.00, no tax and free shipping. The 608 is similarly marked down to $380.00. Onkyo seems to give you some bang for the buck no matter what price range you're at. Sony and Pioneer are a little week if you don't get into their premium line IMO. Vanns has the Pioneer you are looking at marked down from $1000.00 to $499.00.

Looking at purchasing this or Onkyotxsr608 trying to keep it under 500.00. Any thoughts?

I suggest getting a receiver with at least 7.1 preouts if you want to add an outboard amp later down the road. The Onkyo TX-SR608 does not have them.

Better receivers and better deals.

I've had a refurbished receiver for 5 years and it has given me no real headaches, but a new in box 708 at Vanns is only $25.00 more than the prices listed above. For that difference I'll take the new one. The 808, on the other hand is $75.00 less for the refurbished model. That is a little more tempting, but we've blown the $500.00 budget by 35%.
