ssh
I'm finally getting it done. Just taking off the bottom plates helped, but didn't do it. My neighbor accross the street is meticulous with solder, so it may be awhile. SSH
fini
The mod definitely solves the problem. The biggest issue is drilling the holes. They ain't no cheap chrome chassis! Good ol' thick stainless...
ssh
Fini, Did you drill pilot holes, or just 1/4"? I'm buying the carbide bits Monday. SSH
fini
I think I drilled pilot holes first. Remember: Cobalt.
jorjen
Mine were already done by the time I got them. But, I would not go straight to 1/4" bit right off the bat. I would certainly run at least one smaller size pilot hole first, maybe like 1/8". Just a thought.
Don Richard
I like to use a #2 centering drill for pilot holes on stainless. Centering drills have a large shank and a smaller point and are less likely to flex and break. Turn the bit rather slowly, applying pressure so that a continuous chip curls out of the hole. Run the 1/4 " drill more slowly than the smaller drill. Don't run the drills at high speed, only fast enough to shave the metal. If you run the drill too fast you may wind up hardening the stainless, making it very difficult to make a hole. Use a drill press or vertical mill if possible.
