psg
There was a thread on the forum this winter about how even a cheap firewire interface had the potential to be better than a very expensiveUSB interface because the clocking is incorporated into the protocol used in firewire and not in USB. mark1101
You could be right about that..........The most important point is to get the raw data files to your DAC void of any PC software or other soundcard processing. There are probably a few different ways to accomplish that each having its own merits. Several of the manufacturers have their proprietary clock tricks as well. BenchMark has theirs and as you mention...........it is not cheap. The product is solid though. I have all the inputs (Optical, Coax, USB) and outputs used (XLRs and RCAs), and that little box feeds 2 systems. It has not hiccuped even once. I have every source except my Jolida Tubed CDP connected to it (Dish, PC, DVD, measurement rig)..........and it sounds very clean, very clear. I use a tube buffer to soften it a bit..............and that is at NOSValves as we speak getting upgraded. The one comment I would make about BEnchmark is that at times borders on analytical and of course that would vary by system. So a tube buffer definitelyhelps on some source material.
