Help with room setup and receiver selection - thanx

I have just moved into a larger home and now have the ability to put together an area to watch movies/TV (65% of time), games (25%) and listen to music (10%). I have just purchased (2) RF-82, (2) RS-52, (1) RSW-10d and (1) RC-62. I have a 55" Samsung LED on the way.

I was originally going to do this on the first floor but the big boss feels that the TV over the mantle idea would put it too high in the air (I do agree that it is a higher than normal mantle) and it would have to go in the corner. With our furniture and such I think doing a corner setup with the above speakers would be a losing battle. Also, our master is on the first floor and the proposed location in the basement is at the opposite end of the house from the master so when the kiddos have people over to watch movies it may be a little less intrusive.

Like I said, this will be in the basement so a concrete floor under the carpet. After reading some other posts it sounds like I may need to consider adding another sub.

I've been stuck in the early 90's (rear projection TV, 2-channel stereo, etc) so I've got zero experience wtih surround setups. I'm looking for suggestions on two items with the first being the setup as I've diagramed. I'm guessing that the front speaker placement is going to take some moving around but I wondered if you had some initial suggestions for starting points as far as how far off the back wall, from the side walls, etc. Also, the rears will be mounted flush on the back wall because although I do have an option to put it on the side for the right speaker, the left speaker doesn't have a "side" option unless I hang it from the ceiling due to the rest of the basement opening up to the left side. With that being said, how far off the ground should they be mounted? Do the two windows on the right side need to be dealt with in any way? The are "window well" types meaning that they are approximately 3' tall but look out into a pit. They are there to just let light in from above the pit opening. Finally, what cable and connections would you recommend?

The second area I have questions is in regards to the receiver. I have a 25 year old Yamaha separate Pre-amp and 3-channel amp that I'm guessing does nothing for a surround system. I've been looking at Onkyo, Integra, Denon and Anthem. Do you think something in the $1,000 or under range would suffice for this setup without taking away from the speakers?

This is my first post on this forum. I can already see that it will be a ton of help. I love the internet mostly for the forums. It always amazes me that no matter what your niche is, there are 100's or 1000's of others that have a passion like you do.

It's possible, but it depends on how much volume and depth you want. FWIW, if you corner load the RSW-10D by the couch, at that distance and with the boundary gain, you should get a fair bit of output.

I'd start with about a foot off the rear wall, and two feet off the sides.

Also, the rears will be mounted flush on the back wall because although I do have an option to put it on the side for the right speaker, the left speaker doesn't have a "side" option unless I hang it from the ceiling due to the rest of the basement opening up to the left side.

Ideally they would be side mounted, but I won't make fun of you if it isn't feasible. It isn't feasible in my case at the moment either. However, a stand could be an option for the left surround.

With that being said, how far off the ground should they be mounted?

2' above ear level is the recommendation I've seen.

Do the two windows on the right side need to be dealt with in any way? The are "window well" types meaning that they are approximately 3' tall but look out into a pit.

Regular old drapes could help in this case.

Finally, what cable and connections would you recommend?

My vote would be for an Onkyo TX-NR709. It's got a fair amount of power in its own right, and has pre-outs so you could still utilize your 3 channel amp if you so wished. You can find them online for ~$500.

All this said, I have a couple other thoughts: 1: move the couch a couple feet off the rear wall, 2: can you flip the setup so the mains and TV are along the long wall? This can solve the surround dilemma as well as a few other little details.

I have decided to go with the Onkyo TX-NR709 and just placed my order. Now the search for a Blue Ray. I'm thinking either the Oppo BDP-83, a PS3 (even though we already have an XBOX), or to save a few bucks go to the Panasonic DMP-BDT210. I'm leaning to the Oppo since it would seem to "fit" better in terms of the rest of teh quality of the system. Anyone else have any suggestions?
