ricktate
i dont know if this has been covered, but why does the cornwall 2 not have sound deading stuff inside and the older ones do? does it make much difference in sound or was it done to save some money, like switching to mdf wood.rick
lynnm
Actually stuffing a speaker box does not "deaden" the sound but instead increases the effective air mass in the box effectively making it larger - (You would need to consult someone more attuned to the physics of loudspeaker enclosures than I for an explanation as I admit this is counter-intuitive). A small enclosure with a large amount of insulating material will appear to the driver to be the same size as a larger enclosure which has little or no insulating material. Speaker designers use this effect to "tune" the enclosure for the specific driver to be used in the box.

Ray Garrison
lynnm, Yep, it'll make the enclosure "appear" larger to the driver, but it will do so at a significant DECREASE in efficiency in a ported, vented or reflex enclosure. Normally, putting a similar driver in a larger enclosure and tuning it for the same low frequency cutoff will INCREASE the efficiency. Trying to accomplish this by, er, batting down the insides ( ) of a smaller enclosure results in some of the acoustic energy inside the cabinet being converted to mechanical energy and heat, leaving less available to excite the port's air column. By pulling the batting out of the Cornwall, you get a slight increase in efficiency with a moderate trade off in low frequency extension. Of course, nothing in the real world is ever quite that simple, and I'm sure there's folks on this forum who could throw a bookfull of math at me to make these comments more accurater. ------------------ Music is art Audio is engineering Ray's Music System
