artto
Site and Sound: The Architecture and Acoustics of New Opera Houses and Concert Halls by Victoria Newhouse. It also covers a history of ancient Greek and Roman venues to present day as well as a look at planned and future architecture for music. http://www.randomhouse.com/book/201881/site-and-sound-by-victoria-newhouse Click on the "book" and another window will pop up where you can review some of it. And here's a link to a Charlie Rose interview with the author and a panel of guests including hotie soprano Renee Fleming and architect Daniel Libeskind. http://www.charlierose.com/view/interview/12327 I found Libeskind's comments particularly interesting regarding the Grand Canal Theater in Dublin where he mentions the person standing on the stage of this 2000 seat hall can be heard at the "last seat" without any microphone. And of course this hall makes use of one of my favorite acoustical devices, the polycylindrcal diffusor. But of course, some will try to tell you that these are not really "diffusors". Call them what you want. When properly constructed and applied they make for great acoustics.

LarryC
Great book by an author with extraordinary breadth and authority of her knowledge, as brought out by the fine Charlie Rose interview.
