RW8 plus Yamaha R-S300 no work

[:(]

This will teach me for trying to save a buck, sigh...

Yamaha 50w/side receiver/amp, subwoofer cable hooked into the receiver's "subwoofer out" and LTE on the RW8 (bought used) panel.

Power light is on but no sound. None of the controls have any effect.

Wouldn't be the first time I've done something stupid but how can I screw up one cable ?

There does not appear to be a subwoofer on/off option on the receiver.

At this point it appears I can return it or disassemble the sub and see what I see ?

And am I kidding myself this subwoofer is actually going to improve my listening pleasure with my original Heresy's ?

Listening area is ~ 20' x 20'.

Cheers, Don

The sub may be a little small but, that is not the issue. Are the speakers set to Large in the avr? Setting them to small may activate the sub. Also try a Y-connector on the RCA cable going to the sub. This will increase the voltage that the sub see. If I remember correctly you were going to use the sub kinda in a nearfield setting, so try to get it working and see how you like it.

I could be wrong, but I believe I know what your problem is. Since your Yamaha receiver is a 2 channel stereo and not an HT receiver, I don't believe you will not get any sound when using the LFE input on the sub. You may want to hook it up to the left or right (usually people use the left) line in jack, or get a y adaptor and hook it up to both (l + r) inputs for a little more gain. Like I said, I'm not 100% sure about this, but give it a try before you assume you got a bad sub. Keep us informed, and I hope that I was of some help to you...

Thanks very much for the suggestion Rick,

The Yamaha is indeed a two channel stereo receiver and your image is of the back of the sub.

This morning I changed the cable in from the LFE input to the left channel of the line in on the sub.

Still nothing...

Just out of curiousity I tried running only the B speakers in the other room.

I believe the subwoofer out line should still be running the subwoofer in the main room ?

Anywho, not a peep out of the sub in this setting...

To make things even fuzzier, at the beginning of this exercise I had the A channel feeding a splitter to run two sets of speakers in the main room and the B channel running another set in the shop.

The second set of speakers in the main room have been moved but I used their speaker wires off the splitter to do a quick test of the subwoofer.

With both the A speakers and the subwoofer on through the splitter my volume was cut in half.

I actually didn't even bother to see/hear if the subwoofer was working, I just headed off to the store for a subwoofer cable.

Which BTW, cost me half of what I paid for the subwoofer in the first place [:o]

5 m wasn't long enough and the next size was 15 m long...

Cheers, Don

Let's double check a few things: I downloaded the manual;

Double check the connection

Check the speak option: select either A or B and speaker connections

Select an input, cd, tape, ect.

make sure the source is turned on

Make sure volume is up and mute is off, Make sure protection light is off

turn sub gain half way up

Look for green light behind sub

Double checked..

Speaker A and CD selected, volume up [:)]

Subwoofer cable from "subwoofer out" on receiver to "left line in" on sub.

Phase @ 90, lowpass @ 80, power on, side volume control in the middle.

Green light, power set on auto.

Music starts > power light is green, no music for ~ 5 minutes > power light is red.

Gently touching the cone I can feel there is absolutely no movement and no sound.

One troubleshooting guide I found suggested if you have power on and remove the subwoofer cable from the back of the receiver (subwoofer out) and tap on the end of the connector on the cable you should hear something coming from the sub. Not..

Cheers, Don

Don,

I have an RW8 that I onced sold to a friend of mine(when it worked). I took it back about a year ago when it stopped working. It never really had much output to begin with. Even if it was working "properly", I don't think it would do your Heresy's any justice.

My guess is that it has a bad amp.
