Black veneer sand through

Well I got over zealous in trying to remove some scratches and such from the cabinets black finish. I "thought" no big deal...I'm just going to need to do a couple more coats of stain (or...worst case, I paint the cabinets). Well after several attempts to stain the patch(s) back to their original black color...the stain darkens everything but the sand through spots. There's still grain showing, so I didn't think that I had hit the glue in the veneer. Should I just stop wasting my time and grab a small can of black paint? And if I paint...am I going to need to adhere to some finishing guideline, other than "apply paint, and allow to dry"?

Yeah...I'll go with the black lacquer to do this properly. Unfortunately...it appears (from what I've been able to google) that lacquer should be sprayed for the best finish. I'm not sure how I feel about spray painting an entire cabinet in my apartment during the winter months. Though it's not entirerly out of the question...yet.

Thanks,

Walt
