oscarsear
In the late 60's the L.A. Rams fielded a daunting defensive line called the fearsome foursome. Considered the leader of the 4-some was Deacon Jones for whom the term 'sack' (as in sack the quarterback) was coined. Some might be more familiar with Rosey Grier or Merlin Olsen, other members of the 4-some. But Deacon was the Dick Butkus of his era, grisly, remorseless. Some years back my son and I had the opportunity to personally meet some of these older football players. They were a happy but abused lot. Fingers were permanently bent off at 90 degrees, backs were askew, noses smashed. Not that any sport needs to be damagingly violent but footballers from the past were a berserk bunch of men, often angry and mean. Today the game is measured more by penalty flags than scores. Anyway the Deacon is now gone, done hurting no doubt.

philly0116
Well said, my fellow klipschman. A prayer will be said this evening for those he left behind, but not for Deacon, he is in a much better place.
