SE 6BQ5 amp on Chorus II's.

Recommended Posts

I scored a RCA Victor console this weekend for 20 bucks.

AM/FM Phono, with a tape input, tone and balance controls as well.

Must be early sixties vintage.

I hated to do it because the console is in such good shape, but I yanked the SE 6BQ5 power amp out and hooked it up to the Chorus II's.

Though it may not have the power that the Eico push-pulls have, this little amp does just fine with a sweeter top end.

IMO.

Other than clean the pots and sockets, I'm leaving this little flea amp alone.

It has very very little hum and runs cool.

It's that first few watts, I'm tellin' ya.

THANX!

What are you thanking us for? Youre the one with the little amp find!

One of my EICO buddies also has a pair of old 6BQ5 SE amps from ages ago that he pilfered from a console. IT does sound nice although a bit rolled off with a soft bottom end. The midrange is damn nice however. The transformers are almost nonextistant.

Mike,

Nice find. I remember the RCA EL84 pp amps, but didn't know they had produced se versions. Do you have any idea as to whether or not it uses feedback and ultra-linear or pentode operation? I would guess that it would use feedback and one of the two mentioned configurations to get the most power out of the 1 EL84. Still, RCA can be surprising.

I think it has feedback.

I haven't really looked into it yet, I've been enjoying it.

It's quiet, and does great with Mullard's.

Kelly hit it right with the roll off and soft bottom end.

But my ears roll off pretty quick too.

Great midrange though, good little vintage amp.

Anyone have any sort of idea where a link to a schematic would be for this type of amp?

THANX!

I scored a Madison Feilding about 6 months ago with a push/pull 6BQ5/7189 and with matched set of Amperexs in it and it also has Jensen Horn tweater 12" wolfers and coned mid driver. This baby really sings. The turn table is so noisy it isn't even funny !!!!(bearing shot). The AM/FM works flawlessly. Its in great shape and I just don't have the heart to tear it apart. I paid a whopping $45 for this. The Bugle boys alone are worth near $150 to $200.

Old consoles are jewels in the rough for good tubes and amps. I just hate that there so large and if in nice shape I just can't tear them apart.

When I purchased the RCA console, the guy had a Magnavox console that he raided the Jensen tweeters

and whatever woofers out of, and more or less offered it to me just to get off his back porch.

He threw in a pair of ceramic 12 inchers, and I gave it to my friend.

This unit has a Tube reciever with a Solid State L/R mono output amp.

The thing is about 7 feet long, the TT sounds pretty damn good in spite of it's age, the FM reception just locks in the stations.

I had a pair of Sansui 12 ohm horn tweeters to replace the ones in the unit.

They are not as good as the original Jensens but are really not too bad.

My friend and his roomate love it, thing thing is probably early to mid-sixties and in great shape with good finish yet.

The local College Jazz stations make it sing.
