johnnydrama
I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in 2-channel listening. I've had a 5.1 setup for the last 5 years. And I have always had a receiver capable of the HD codecs. I've now moved to a 2 channel setup and have been watching a lot of movies. I have my H/K avr354 set to choose the best audio format with each source. When I watch a Blu-ray it stays on the HD Codec(DTS HD-Master, Dolby TrueHD, etc.) and pumps out the sounds in 2 channel. It also does this for regular Dolby Digital. I was under the impression that these were surround codecs? Am I missing something? Is this correct and the right way to go? All dialogue and sounds seem to be played while it's doing this. Edited June 2, 2014 by johnnydrama

The HD audio content is being downmixed to a still uncompressed high resolution stereo mix. In some cases, a 24bit/96kHz multichannel mix may be downsampled to 48kHz stereo but still be a high resolution uncompressed signal. Or it may be downmixed to uncompressed stereo PCM. Bill I see... so this would be the preferred option and give me the highest quality audio as opposed to changing the receiver setting to stereo? Sorry, this 2 channel stuff is very new to me.
