Jim
Question for the tube guys, I am running my turntables through a Cambridge Audio 551P Phono pre, into my Yaqin MC-10L Intergrated.I also use a Class A SET occasionally. Would it make sense to add in a tube phono pre in place of the Cambridge Audio? Will I gain any positives in SQ, or is it not warranted? tube fanatic
Jim, the best thing to do is to buy one from a dealer who will allow you to return it if not satisfied. That's the only way you're going to know if it will be worth the expense. A few dollars in lost shipping charges for a 30 day audition in your own system is well worth it in my opinion! But, I think you said that you have 2 vintage amps being restored which will, of course, have tube phono stages in them. You could use the latter, and feed a signal from the tape monitor outputs into your other tube amps, like your SET, to get an idea as to sound. And, that won't cost you anything extra!
