Daveh
I noticed popping / distortion coming from one of my speakers. I pushed hard on the back of the speaker cabinet and the popping / distortion went away. So I suspect the cabinet is loose. Any tips on where I might start researching this? I suspect I will need to somewhat disassemble the cabinet and glue / reinforce. Any advice is appreciated.
jimjimbo
I wouldn't recommend taking the cabinet apart. I would remove all of the drivers (in both cabinets), and use a strong, clear drying construction adhesive, such as Loctite Power Grab on all joints, front, back and sides. Put a healthy bead on all surfaces. Let dry for 24 hours.
Daveh
Thank you. I took the drivers out. The original adhesive is between the back panel and the back edges of the speaker cabinet. I'm concerned if I lay down new adhesive, it won't flow into the space between the back panel and the speaker cabinet - because that is where the existing adhesive is. If I put new adhesive down, it looks like it would sit like caulking between a countertop and backsplash. Maybe that's good enough. I'm thinking about tacking in a one by one piece of wood - tacking it to the back panel and the cabinet side.
dtr20
I'm not sure what kind of glue/adhesive they used on the later kg's, but couldn't he just go with the klf method? Remove drivers and crossover, use a heat gun on the edges of the back panel, carefully pry the back panel off, clean old adhesive, then use liquid nails to glue it back together. Clean up excess in the back, from the inside, use your finger to create a corner seal with the excess inside from the side panels to the back panel. Lay it on its front with some weights on the panel and let it dry. Fyi, liquid nails takes 7 days to cure, so no music until 7 days.
Daveh
I like that idea. I'm going to take a closer look at that idea. Thank you.
