vintage console stereos?

After looking at pics of several vintage amps and then even more strange audio items on ebay, I've circled back to my first memories of a stereo...console stereos. Always the dinosaur as I learned about HiFi, so now I ask what I never even considered.....

Are the tube amps in those old coffins worth salvaging and hooking up to different sources and speakers?

On another note I need to find a reel-to-reel for my grandfather so he can listen to old recordings of hunting dogs and birds along the Amazon. Nothing fancy just a portable player or something that can be hooked up to his Bose Wave radio or old console stereo. I assume I'll buy the first sub $100 fully functional item I find on ebay.

About all one could say safely is that the old console VT amps would certainly be better than the early SS ones. I remember some of the Magnavox consoles with claims of 1000 watts of peak power! Yeah, right.

My first audio project was replacing the 8" oval "full range" speakers in our stereo with an 8" mid/woof and 2" tweeter lifted from a Voice of Music portable from school. Of course, I replaced the 8" full range into the VM. I was the only one that noticed a difference in either system. Perhaps not the best way to get into audio, but, hey, I had no money and had to have music.

Our old console was vastly improved...
