Separate Phono Stage

Recommended Posts

Thinking about going another direction with my preamp and phono stage. I'm very intrigued by the devices that function as both a phono stage and ADC. First and foremost I want a fantastic phono stage. But the ability to convert my large LP collection to digital with the same device is very appealing. These three have caught my eye. Anyone have any experience with any of these or general thoughts on putting one of these in front of a tube preamp. I have a MC cartridge so any phono stage must support that.

I should probably add that I'm currently using a Blueberry Extreme with Cream option. Thus I have the necessary step up transformers (I think the correct jargon) in the tube preamp to step up my MC cartridge appropriately. I'm more than happy with the results. Sometimes you just get the itch to switch things up. I was thinking that if I go with something along the lines in the first post plus a tube preamp I'd be set for any MC cartridge I might want to play with in the future and have the ability to slowly digitize my LP collection. I realize I could buy something just to convert analog to digital independent of my preamp but I'm also keen on trying a new pre amp just because.

Thanks for any input on the above or similar.

Hi Rich,

This would not be an easy decision for a number of reasons (it's older and used, has two chasses), and the new Mac in your first link does more than compete at the same price, but I like my Joule Electra tube phono capability and performance:

Anyway, FYI.  Note -- no digital capability, two awkward chassis units.  However, I now have a really low output Transfiguration cart that generates only 0.20 mv out, and yet still has plenty of low-noise gain.
