Need Altec 511B horns! In Europe!

Yes, i am for myself from nuremberg, germany.

It's truely hard to find some altec stuff in europe. I'm looking for Altec 511 B horns on ebay. There were two auctions from mrmore to this horns and the reserve price never was reached. Maybe he puts it in in a third auction we can bid.

A friend of me has two EV SM 120A horns. When i installed them in my klipschorns i will notice the forum about the changes. Tom Brennan recommends them as an upgrade. Sorry, i don't know anyone else who would sell these EV horns. I remember an ebay auction about a half year ago they were sold.

And very rare are some offers at Musikhaus Thomann in the "Kleinanzeigen" section, look here:

Frans, Bernd,

I am also from Germany (Essen) but it seems we are a minority on this BB (and I don't forget our Greek connection). As a Klipsch owner one tends to be rather isolated (I find) so it's a pity we can't get together to share experiences 'in the flesh'.

Yep, true; incidentally all the Klipsch pieces I bought second hand were used in the PA sector. Very few belgian people use horn speakers for their hi-fi system; most of those who do own old JBL and stuff like that.

Bad thing is: I don't have friends who own klipsch speakers; good thing is: those used klipsch speakers from the PA sector come for very cheap ( I paid 250$ for my La Scalas)...

I'll let you know if I buy the EV horns, and how they sound...I'm sure they sound fantastic!

Thanks Guy, but it's a bit out of my budget!...

I missed the auction on the SM120 today. I was the winner, until at the last second, a guy came and outbidded me. And he bought BOTH pairs! he didn't even let me one...GRRRR :o( I spent the whole day thinking about it. This guy is a DJ, I'm sure one pair will stay in his garage, while he destroys the other...

anyway there's a new pair for sale already, but it's more expensive. They come with the EV drivers, i was wondering if those drivers are better than my K55V.

I'll let you know if I get those. They are close to the Belgian border, wich is nice to say the least. But I'm afraid i'll be outbidded again by a deep pocketed DJ... hem.

I've watched this two auctions, but did not bid. It's pity, that you didn't won the auctions. For the third auction i wish you much luck.

In a 15 year old speaker catalogue this EV Sentry horns without drivers were sold for about 220 Euro, so the price which the horns left the first two auctions is ok. The 1824 M and 1824 S driver were sold for about 230 Euro.

The EV 1824 M driver would not be ok in klipschorns or La Scalas. The EV tech sheet for the 1824 S driver (which has greater power handling)shows a usable frequency range from 300 to 3000 Hz +/- 5 dB with a SPL of 107 dB. Better would be a 1828 (260 - 10000 Hz +/- 5 dB) or an 1829 (280 - 8000 Hz +/- 5 dB) both have a SPL of 105 dB. In an old post William F. Gil McDermott told he is using the 1829 with a wooden horn.

You should care about the right impedance for the mid driver. The K-55 is rated 16 Ohm vs. the 1824 rated 8 Ohm. The 1824 would appear louder than the K-55, please ask a network specialist.

There is the Monacor KU-516 driver for 50 Euro, but with an upper frequency limit of 6500 Hz i believe, that the frequency response falls too much before the 6000 Hz crossover setting in the klipschorn.

Now much luck in the last auction. I know, what you do on sunday night.

Bernd
