6.1

Most movies DO have 6 channels, 5 main channels and 1 low frequency channel. Now, 7 channel is more rare, Gladiator is 7 channel, 6.1.

A fiber optic cable could carry a 60 channel sound track if it wanted to, it is the original encoding and what the receiver is capabile of that matters.

Wesgoff,

Only DVD-A and SACD use analog cables for music. Movies with 6.1 all use digital cables.

There are three 6.1 formats. Dolby Surround EX, DTS ES discrete and DTE ES matrix. Not all DVD players pass DTS but most do. Not all receivers decode all 6.1 formats, so enquire before you buy. Most new receivers above the budget level can handle 6.1, but many lack an amplifier for the sixth channel.

Bottom line is that the whole system needs to handle 6.1.

Many newer movies have 6.1. Both Star Wars are DD EX as is Harry Potter. Gladiator is DTS ES discrete. Pearl Harbor is 6.1 and the list goes on.

The trend is for new high budget movies like LOTR is to use 6.1. Movies prior to Star Wars I never have 6.1. Hope that this helps.

Bill
