No surround sound from PS2?!

I got a PS2 for Christmas... hooked it up to my Onkyo TX-SR500, got lovely DTS in Vice City, but in any other game with Dolby Surround option checked, I get no surround sound. My receiver only says All Channel Stereo. Anyone know a solution? Although it sounds strange, could it be because I have no memory card? I can't get it to work, and it is frustrating... I wanted PS2 for its surround sound... now I get none?

Yes... this just came to me- Dolby Surround and PL are the same. 3.gif I missed this how? Oh well... I am certainly NOT a fan of PL, though I have PLII which is almost not as bad, yet it is... but oh well. I will have to live with it until they make more games like Vice City in DTS/DD.
