sunnysal
it seems to carry the amplifier section of a 299 and adds a 300 series tuner. does anyone think this might be a good unit to own? sound? looks cool! tony
NOSValves
It could be a great unit but also could be major pain if the FM section is not up to snuff . Its hard to find Techs that can Allign a FM section. These are also highly sought after collector pieces so the tend to get pricey. You never know these day's what a piece will go for the market is soft from the pour economic conditions. Craig
sunnysal
here's the url craig: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3002330405&category=3279 the thing is so neat looking I may be tempted to bid...$399 for a 399? are you good with the FM part? ; ) If I get it I will just have it mailed to you directly. regards, tony
mobile homeless
I feel safe in saying that Craig is not going to mess with the tuner as aligning the tuner and getting it right is more akin to black magic with only a few that are really good at it. While Craig might mess with the amp side, the tuner, besides cap replacement etc, can really be problematic. I personally would look for SEPARATE components here with a vintage integrated like the Scott or EICO etc, and a separate tuner. Getting a vintage receiver to me is abit like buying one of those Televisions with the VCR inside. There is a good chance the VCR will go before the TV and then you have a mess. Take me advice; get an integrated and sep tuner. I have an EICO HFT-90 FM tube unit from 1954 or so. It works like a champ. It was VERY cheap and had ALL MULLARD. Stick to a quality vintage integrated and youll have less of a chance for major headache. kh
NOSValves
Kelly is absolutely right for the most part. The only reason to buy one of these is for the Neat Factor. I don't even have the equipment to align a tuner and again Kelly is right there are only a few people in the USA that do it. I know one and he has a 6 month back log. The looks of this receiver is excellent and I would almost bet it works fine. I also bet it goes for a good chunk with the factory box and all. I would venture to say $550 to $700 these are collector Items. The Wood case alone is worth $150 !! This is the first one I remember seeing with the Original wood case seems most were installed in custom cabinets If you just love the looks I'm not going to say don't buy it. I just want to make it clear that if the FM section doesn't work right it will have to be sent to a specialist to tackle that part. The amp section will still be usable before the FM section is gone through. The most that ever goes wrong with the FM sections is alignment of coarse the Caps and other parts may need replacement but that isn't a big deal. sunnysal
sure is purdy though ain´t it? I will keep my eye on it, if it goes cheap ($399 or less) I will be in the bidding (and delaying a month or so the 300b amp). If not I keep saving the pennies for Jeff´s 300b SET...oh boy! tony
Audio Flynn
SAL, Nice to see you back in the forum. I am trying the same vintage quest. I am not really comfortable with online negotiating. I am staying away from the tuner concerns as well.
