m00n
rob, that tube amp.... I have seen other amps like that from other peoples pics and web sites. Is it just one particular brand that exposes the tubes like that, or is this some DIY kit you put together? Or is this just a style of casing where a lot of companies build their amps with the tubes exposed. They just seem so voulnerable
robforst1
Most tube amps expose the tubes (because they look cool). My amp is made by Antique Sound Labs (http://www.divertech.com/antiquesl.html). I think they offer kits in other countries. The amp I bought is pre-assembled. It is amazing how loud a couple of small speakers and 5 watts can get! I am running 2 heresy speakers and the detail, soundstage and sheer volume is amazing. HDBRbuilder
Tubes get HOT and need good air flow to dissipate that heat...that is why it is recommended to leave them exposed. Older tube amps with cages only HAVE the cages to protect the tubes from breakage...the tubes stay cooler with the cages removed! As always, heat is a bigtime killer of amps, if it isn't allowed to dissipate...it makes no difference if it is a tube or solid state unit...they all need good airflow!
