Due to acquiring some new HT furniture, I want to remove the big rubber foot, AKA the tilt rod, from the front hole in the bottom of my RP-500C center channel. (There's nothing in the rear hole.)

When I try to unscrew the foot, after I get it out about 1/4", I start to feel resistance. It feels like it's attached to a spring inside,  or like something's wrapped around it and tightening as I turn it. The resistance gets strong quickly and I'm afraid to twist it any further for fear of breaking something inside.

Any ideas what might be going on? Is there a safe way to remove the rod?

You can try and spray some kind of lubricant into the threads but I’d be more worried about staining or damaging the finish of the speaker doing that.

Bingo! I took off the port and stuck my hand in. Turns out the screw was semi-glued to the insulation and pulling fluff into the hole when I unscrewed it! I gently peeled off the insulation with one hand while unscrewing the post from the outside with the other, and voila!
