kd5ftn
Ok, I'm buying a Fujitsu N3010 Lifebook Laptop as my main machine for college. I'm going to use it for gaming/music, all that good stuff. Obviously, it has poor integrated AC97 audio. I want to find a good external USB Sound card to take advantage of my 4.1's and be ready to expand to 5.1 someday. Am I limited to just USB or are there any PCMCIA solutions? And what sound card do you recommend? Thanks!
justin_tx_16
I have not seen a PCMCIA sound cards. Try Firewire or USB2, USB 1.1 is just not enough IMHO.
MD1032
Audigy 2 PLATINUM eX. That'll satisfy even you. Or the Extigy if you're just looking for a cheap solution that will still get the job done.
kd5ftn
Umm.. Doesn't the Audigy 2 PLATINUM eX still require a PCI slot? That's not really an option on a laptop. Is there anything besides the Extigy? It's use of USB 1.1 really leaves bandwidth to be desired..

Thanks! ---------------- I read this article in Computer Gaming World(the magazine started to suck now though) a while back, and they had this review of this external sound board called the "Yamaha RP-U200 CAVIT External Audio Soundboard Reciever" it doubles as a sound card and a decoder. I am not sure of the price.. but I think it is around 400 dollars.. a bit steep maybe. This is the only external sound board i know besides the Extigy. Try www.yamaha.com and do a search on this sound board for more infomation.
kd5ftn
So, my choices are the M-Audio Sonica Theater - 7.1 - USB for $119 http://www.midiman.net/products/consumer/sonicaTheatre_page1.php Or Soundblaster Extigy - 5.1 - USB for $150 http://www.soundblaster.com/products/extigy/ Without seeing any reviews of it yet, it sounds pretty close. I like how the extigy has a remote control, but the 7.1 definatly leaves room to grow
MD1032
Get the M-audio. DEFINITELY. The Extigy has been proven by Creative's own technicians to only be 16 bit. M-audio is a name you can trust, and it's cheaper. Go with it.
