Where to find quadrophonic preamps?

Recommended Posts

my brother has an electrovio "discreet quadrophonic" all-in-one receiver, tuner, and yes......

8 TRACK player. He also has some quad records, though his TT is shot. The reciever has like a joystick with this flourescent display for the balance control.... trippy.

He is the only person on the planet I know who has quad, that is still working and he still uses this up in his home office...

those Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, and ELP 8 tracks sound groovy....

Although not a PreAmp, the Dynaco SCA 80-Q 4 Dimensional Amp may suit your needs and can usually be found on eBay for less than $150 in excellent shape.

Currently there are 2 on eBay. One for parts and the other a little below average.

There are two models that are very simular The SCA 80 (stereo) and the SCA 80Q (Quad).

Suggestion for searching: " Dynaco SCA* " This will also get some 35's, which you can ignore. Then look at anything else. Frequently the seller fails to indicate the "Q" in the title. Just verify the "4-DIMENSIONAL" on the front or the "DYNACO SCA 80-Q" on the rear (which I have attached a pictue of)

Hope this is helpful,

Mike

Your best bet is to hunt down an old quad receiver in excellent condition...they sometimes show up on ebay. There were three types of encoding on quad records: SQ matrix, QS mastrix, and CD-4/discrete. CD-4/Discrete is the only TRUE 4-channel encoding system, BUT it requires a CD-4 demodulator to work. SQ and QS matrix quad systems rely on a carrier signal to determine which parts of the left and right signals get sent to the rear speakers, whereas CD-4/discrete actually remodulates the left and right rear signals up to a higher bandwidth before putting them down on each side of the record groove...requiring a demodulator to demodulate this frequency band back down to its original bandwidth, in order to be heard...this is accomplished while a short time delay is incorporated for the front signals so that they all come out of the speakers at the proper time.

Only a few of the old quad receivers had everything "built-in" to decode ALL quad records, no matter what type of record format was used.

The Harman/Kardon 800+ and 900+ model receivers are two of the best in the "does it all" category. The only real problem with them is that they are very "busy" under the hood and need excellent ventilation in order to blow off heat from their amplifier heat sinks with all the circuitry stacked up around those heat sinks...therefore, many of these have "bitten the dust" over time due to heat-related problems and users who didn't take good care of them. Occassionally these come up for bid on ebay. Good luck!

The old Phase Linear preamp (model 4000?) supported quad IIRC.

Some of the big Japanese quad receivers (Pioneer, Marantz, Sansui) of the 1970's had pre out/main in jumpers. These would support some or all of the matrix quad modes, as well as CD-4 and discrete quad (4-channel tape).
