Help! Panel for Cornwall Grille

Hardhead

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I'm adding a grilles to the 1979 Cornwells I bought recently. I don't know why they don't have grilles, but they appear never to have had any. I'm trying to get ideas on what material to use for the panel to mount the grille cloth onto. I looked at some 1/8" Masonite sheets today, but they seemed very heavy. My Heresys have grill panels made of other material that is much lighter, but I don't know what it is to ask for it.

Other than Masonite, does anyone have any ideas on what I can make the grille panels from?

Also, where can I get black grille cloth that matches the cloth on older Heritage models? I called Klipsch, and they suggested I not get it there because it was overpriced. (How's THAT for customer service?!)

Thanks in advance for your help.

What is your concern about the weight of the Masonite? I would say it is the material of choice. Certainly, Velcro bits will hold it in place. If your Cornwalls are the Designer (flush-front) models, these typically require a bit of wood trim installed on to the Cornwalls to frame the grills. Got photos?

To add a bit to this thread, I wonder if someone could post a picture of the back of the removable grilles. I have a pair of 1975 CWs and I'm planning on replacing the cane grille cloth. I would, however, like these to be removable. I am curious as to the cutout pattern Klipsch used on their later models.

I will remove the original trim and grille cloth, then I'll add permanent trim and the masonite panels. At some point I would like to veneer the speakers.

BTW, these are great speakers and I've found this forum to be most helpful.

Fini--

I was reluctant to use Masonite because the panels in my Heresys aren't Masonite, and they're much lighter than Masonite. Also, given half a chance, Masonite warps fairly easily, especially in the 1/8" thickness, although being that thin would make them easy to straighten.

My Cornwalls aren't flush front. They look like they were made to have grilles, but there just isn't any Velcro anywhere on them.

I'll probably try the Masonite, especially if I can pick out a couple of straight 2' x 4' pieces.

Thanks for the help.

I saw a new thing at home depot its called erasable marker board very thin and stiff....would make a great grill board i think. Also there are other boards better than masonite stuff, like the thin white panels for bathroom not sure what its called, but you just need to look around.....rick...also the cut outs match the ports and drivers exactly on my 2s

Your speakers may be the decorator models that were designed to be used without grills. See Chris Kings avatar for a photo of some nice looking grill-less decorator cornwalls.

It so happens that Chris and I have purchased another pair of these stain grade front decorator 77 cornwalls that we are in the process of restoring. The guy we bought them from, put grills on them by stapleing velcro to the front panel. I am now in the process of filling the staple holes in advance of refinishing. We do however a pair of grills that will line up with the outside edge of your speakers - provided that yours are indeed decorator models. They are black and are in good condition. I'll take a photo of them and post it here if you are interested. Let me know.
