But, yes, there are meters that I've seen at home depot which can send a test signal through the line to tell wires apart. If both wires are copper in color then one side should have some small raised ridges on the plastic that protects the wire. When I have used this type of wire I use the side with the raised ridges as positive. If you are not sure look how you connected it on the back of your amp look. If it turns out this is the type of wire you have find the side of the wire that has the ridges and you'll know how you connected it to the amp and just do the same where it comes out from the wall.
