back from Spring Break. On the way down, I turned off the tone controls in my car's reciever, and the sound was incredibly muddy! it sounded awful, the bass was so indiscriminant, it sounded like a mess. after about 2 hours, i couldnt stand it any longer and turn the controls back on. So i figured, maybe a car's environment is different than at home. The acoustics might mandate the controls to be used to compensate for the awkward environment.

I don't know if it is the car environment or not, but it was the otherway around for me. With the tone controls cranked up, the sound was horrible. The highs were ear-piercing, the mids where difficult to make out, and the bass was all boomy and muddy. This was both on my car and home systems. I turned on tone-defeat and I found the sound to be much cleaner and more accurate. The highs were not ear-piercing and very listenable, the mids where very clear and easy to understand, and the bass was clean, tight and well-defined.

I guess it is truly to each thier own on this topic, but I still hold to the school of thought that if all other options are exhausted (i.e., placement, room treatment, etc), then use the tone controls to dial in the sound you want.
