Running out of ideas. Is there anything else I can do?

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

I own a pair of Quartets, and I have dome pretty much every mod I can think of. I have changed all the parts on the crossover's and I have upgraded the internal wiring. Although I'am pleased with the sound very much so, I was wondering if there was anything else I could do to enhance to the speaker. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks

There comes a time in every tweaker's life when one must move on to bigger and better tweaks.

You can go any or all of the following directions:

1) get different speakers to tweak (Heritage a plus for years of happy tweaking); you can always keep the old speakers

2) system tweaks, such as cabling, interconnects, stands, and vibration-free cabinetry.

3) source gear upgrades (expensive) ; this is mighty fun for "gear-heads" with big wallets

Add height to the bases. Get a couple of cinder blocks and you can see if you like the change (If you do, there are obviously far more elegant solutions 2.gif!). I found raising them to the height of a Forte or Chorus makes them much more 'tonally' compatible with it's larger siblings.

If you want to know what I am talking about before investing a dime, put a chair in the sweet spot and listen to your favorite CD. Then listen to the same selection sitting on the floor, and then lying on the floor. Unless you are pretty far back from the speakers, the tweeter and midrange tend to be just too close to the floor. Raising them 4 or 5 inches (aprox. the height of a Forte) makes a big difference IMO anyway. In any case, you really have nothing to lose.

Wow Bill!, that is a temepting offer, but I think I will stick with my Quartets.2.gif Well I did go out and get some cinder blocks like Jerohm suggested. The speakers do sound more free if you will. I don't know if it's because the Squawker is more at ear level or is it because it's higer off the ground so the carpet is not soaking up as much of the music.

Really though, even though I love my quartets. I think what I' really looking for is that bigger horn sound, but I'm getting married next month so I don't know when that will be.
