Maynard42
Hi all, I was wondering if anybody out there had an opinion as to what is the best recording (on CD) of Mozart's Requiem. I'm not looking for anything thats really hard to find, although if there is a somwhat rare recording I would be willing to invest a little time in finding it. Thanks in advance m
damonrpayne
Check to see if there is a Detuch Grammaphon recording, which I think there is. I've been turned on to DG lately.

Sorry, my better Mozart Requiems are on LPs, and sometimes I have mixed feelings about those. It's a fine, reflective work, but that's in spite of the fact that Mozart himself didn't write very much of it directly, being on his death-bed. He sketched some parts of several movements, and gave lots of directions to his pupil, Sussmayer (sp?), who did an amazing job of fleshing out the sketchy parts and composing the rest himself in astonishingly seamless style. A mysterious final work befitting a legendary death. Larry
GooseChaser
I have three different recording's of Mozart's Requiem in D minor. The first one I heard was the soundtrack for the movie, "Amadeus", which was conducted by Jean-Claude Malgoire. the last two were conducted by Herbert Von Karajan and published by Deutsche Grammophon. By far, the second recording I bought is my favorite. The soundtrack CD comes as a second but that recording is obviously thinner sounding and the performance is overstated in comparison to the other two. Not to mention, this recording is excerpts of only four sections. It is not an option if you are looking for the complete work. Here's the information on the recording I am recommending. Herbert Von Karajan, Conductor Anna Tomowa-Sintow, Sopran Helga Muller Molinari, Alt/contralto Vanson Cole, Tenor Paata Burchuladze, Bass With the Wiener Philharmoniker Remixed for Karajan Gold I think I spent several month listening almost exclusively to the Requiem. It is truly great.
