CECAA850
For those of you using one, what are the sonic benefits. Are they only used if your player has digital outputs? I'm assuming yhat they go between your source and pre/pro. I guess i'm looking for a laymans explination on why they exist. Thanks, Carl. ironwoods
Hi, are you asking about stand alone/outboard type? Most DVD players now-a-days don't contain one, as is the main reason they're so friggin' cheap(thanks again Fini) Now, they are usually incorporated into the AVR. Outboards exist for quality and /or isolation reasons, just as seperate pre/amp's and amps do. Layman enough?
CECAA850
Yes, I was talking about stand alone units. I've seen them with high end players and couldn't figure out their function. I didn't know if adding one to a regular player would help. Carl
formica
Like anything else depends what you are starting from and to what you are going to. The sonic signature of a CD player is dictated by it's built in DAC... so buying another external DAC will make it sound like a different player. The sound change is discreet from one DAC to another... much the same as the sound difference between one player and the next. If you use the digital output from your CD to your receiver... you are using you CD simply as a transport, and your receiver as an external DAC. The sound signature will mostly come from the receiver. If you are using the analog output from your CD player... you are using it's built in DAC, and hear it's sonic signature. It's has been argued if there are any audible benefits from one transport to next... but that is another cup of tea... Rob
