TommyC
I found an interesting pair of amps today that I had never heard of. They are labled "Single Ended MOSFET Class A Amplifier" and appear to have been built from a kit. Anyone know what these are?

TommyC
The ones I saw looked very similar to those but had no manufacturer data on them. They also had chrome plated bases and appeared to be bigger. Same theory though, I guess. Thanks for the link. Have you ever heard any of them? They belong to a guy who invited me to check out some DIY Speakers he built. He didn't know anything about them. He inherited them and had not hooked them up to his system yet because he wasn't quite sure if they were ok or might damage his speakers. WMcD
Nelson Pass is pretty much the champion of simple MOSFET designs. He published his Zen design. "What is the sound of one hand (transistor) clapping." He is very supportive of the DIY theory and his many designs appeared in AudioExpress magazine. At one time he complained that there were commercial rip offs of his projects meant for the do it yourselfer. Maybe this is one. An N-channel MOSFET class A is the solid state equivalent of a simple triode tube amp, which audiophiles love. Number 9
The Pass Labs "Aleph" circuit has been described as "single-ended class A with Mos-Fet output." The Aleph 30 for example got many rave reviews back in the '90s. Now discontinued, but still well sought after on Audiogon and eBay.

TommyC
My friend contacted the original owner and they are indeed DIY amps based on a Nelson Pass design. He said that Mr. Pass even provided him with tech support while he was building them. Good call, Gill. They sound Great BTW! We found someone to give them the once over and make sure they wouldn't damage his speakers and hooked them to a pair of Chorus II's that he has. We were both amazed at how good they sounded.
