Poll: Prefered type of amplification...

But I really have no preference since I have no ill will towards PP or SS.

If money was no object, I'd also own a PP in the form of a classic McIntosh MC240 or MC225, and my favorite SS to date, a vintage McIntosh MC250![:o]

Great poll. I've been wondering about this for a long time.

What better way to start the Polls feature than the classic amp

debate? [;)] I do realise that results in HT would probably

be quite different than 2channel ... but a close race is always more

interesting...

I have been using a 140 watt per , current dumping , SS , Quad 606 for 12 years now . Yeah I know it's cold compared to tubes , but I love it's honesty . The rise and fall of the music signal is incredible , it still suprises me ! When music passages go silent , they go dead silent . I will admit that since I got my Belles 2 months ago that my older CD's sound much better than the new ones . The recording levels of new CD's has gone through the roof ! I can crank up the old stuff without fatigue , but some , most , almost all , of the new stuff is somewhat Searing ! Still sounds good , but just has to be played at a lower level . In 12 years my amp has reqiured no maintenance , And stays on unless the power goes out ... Now my other amp , a SS Accurus , that I use for my surrounds is another story ... The best way I can put it is that using a Quad 606 to drive a pair of Belles , is like using a sledghammer to kill an ant ! Oh , I almost forgot , IMO [:P]

But what about hybrid

systems where tubes are used for say MF/HF and SS is used for LF or

subs? And other possible topologies and scenarios... I suspect that

there are a few of us that use both.

Yeah, I would imagine many people own both (or all three) but what fun

would it be if there wasn't a clear winner? [;)] That was why i

mentionned "prefered" rather than "owned" but SS/Tube bi-amp systems do

represent another option i didn't list.

Oh well... it is just for the fun of it...

When I was an air traffic control radar techie in the Air Force, I was

stationed at Ramstein AFB in Germany for three years.

At the time our airport surveillance radar (60 mile sweep radar) was a

Texas Instruments solid state system that took up a whole building.

The final approach radar, however, was all vacuum tube.

Care to guess which system consumed ALL

of my time? I'll give you a hint - it wasn't the solid state

system - other than for routine maintenance, I rarely had to set foot in the

building. On the other hand, I spent most of my shifts up to my armpits in the tube stuff.

Just as there is a reason why some people prefer tube amps - there is

also a reason why some people would not have them on a bet. To

each their own....

where is analogue class D (class T)?

solid state calss A?

preferernce meaning what? for chamber music? movies? multi-channel?

considering the number of tube amps sold in retial stores - what I have maybe a dozen, possibly two dozen over the last 2 decades, I think 40% liking tubes, even in a horn forum, is HUGE
