Frzninvt
I am certainly not dismissing the trend, new technology is great! I am just providing my opinion on what I heard first hand. Keep in mind these were bone stock and not modified in any way. They are obviously going to sound different, highly dependent of the application, source components, speakers and room.Could have even been a polarity issue as it was not my system, when we switched the amps out the performance or lack thereof was immediately apparent.I just could not recommend them to the guy for his intended application based on what I had heard.I use a pair of extremely rare, and tremendously overbuilt DBX BX1 Reference Configurable Power Amplifiers that sold for about $4K-$5K back in '89 so I have spoiled ears. The specs and sound are unreal, truly engineering marvels. They can handle a 0.1ohm load, and will pump full power into 2uf capacitor for a 1/2 hour before thermal shutdown. Have a read for yourself I attached a copy of the user manual.
DrWho
Why not go with 4 pairs of Crown XLS or QSC something something pro amplifiers? They can be had for like $300 and are probably some of the best sounding SS amps available...the only trick is getting around the fan noise; either creative amp location or changing out the fans (which can be bought for like 20 cents each from digi-key). tigerwoodKhorns
Actually, the fans are about $20, but well worth it.
