Jeff Matthews
When I play drums to CD's, the vibrations make the CD-player skip. Some recommended tennis balls, etc. as shock absorbers. I wonder whether there is a good MP3 player for use with stereos. One that has easy menus, easy organization and navigation, lots of storage, etc. And.... if so, will MP3 stand the test of time, or are we moving to something else? I have also been searching for an MP3 server that I could integrate with my HT system that would incorporate a hard drive (not be hampered by slow WIFI network speed during playback) but also support archiving MP3s to WIFI networked PCs. Daddy Dee
Sonic, Thanks for posting those links. I've been hoping to do something like that in my system. Those things are pricier than I expected, though. For those type prices, the convenience of a single unit isn't so attractive.
gibby214
Am I really missing something? HOw about the iPod? I understand MP3 is one of the compressed audio files as well as AAC (MPEG 4). iPod literature says that AAC is slightly better than MP3 with the same kbps. Uncompressed audio files such as AIFF and WAV are better sound quality at the expense of storage space. I am by no means an expert. I just got my first digital camera and an iPod about 6 weeks ago. Is there such thing as critical listening with a digital compressed music?
Sonic Reaper
Am I really missing something? HOw about the iPod? I also looked at the IPOD 60GB but was unable to locate an docking station for my home stereo that would support remote control (Harmony) of IPOD's music management software with on-tv screen display of IPOD menus for navigating and searching the music taxonomy. Maybe someone on this forum knows of an IPOD docking station that provides this. I believe Integra may have an IPOD docking station that provides these functions but only works with Integra receivers. Uncompressed audio files such as AIFF and WAV are better sound quality at the expense of storage space. I am also interested in digital audio files with higher quality than standard MP3 compression (WAV, FLAC, or other "lossless compression"). That is one reason I am looking at media servers with greater than 100GB storage capacities.
Sonic Reaper
I believe Integra may have an IPOD docking station that provides these functions but only works with Integra receivers. I checked for more info on Integra/Onkyo new IPOD docking station and found that it does not display IPOD's music management menus on your television screen - just photos stored on IPOD and in this mode you lose remote control of the IPOD. http://www.onkyousa.com/news.cfm?id=106 I have not been able to find a docking station that provide replicates the display of IPOD's music management menus on your tv as the Creston CEN-IPOD does on a Creston touchpad display. http://www.crestron.com/products/show_products.asp?jump=1&model=CEN-IPOD
DrWho
Well you could always just set up an HTPC....and easily do it for around $300. I know ATI sells an uber-cool RF remote that works through walls (so you could even put your PC in another room and just have longer runs for audio/video). gibby214
ON SCREEN DISPLAY for the menu on an iPOD would be great. I don't believe the 5th generation video iPods will do that. But they do have a A/v out on the headphone jack for pictures and movies etc... Leave that up to Apple next Christmas time the 6th generation iPod. 100GB with OSD. Pioneer Elites new reciever has XM radio and IPod friendly features. I don't know about the OSD though?

If Klipsch brought to market a new version of the IFI docking station with OSD (as provided by the Centron's CEN-IPOD) I would not have to wait for the next Apple IPOD model. - Amy Has anyone in the Klipsch marketing dept performed a study on an IFI docking station with OSD? I believe many potential customers for Escient, or Audio Request music servers with IPOD 60GB models would consider the Klipsch docking station instead. I imagine I would be happy to start with two IPOD 60GB models and one Klipsch "IFI+" docking station (each IPOD would function as a hot swappable drive configured with a different assortment of music until IPOD supports navigation of music collections that span multiple IPODs/PCs and can play music stored on remote IPODs/PCs with negligible impact on playback performance.) Sonic Reaper
I do not have to wait for Apple to release a new version of IPOD with OSD or for Klipsch to release a new IFI docking station. In March DLO will be shipping a docking station that not only plays your MP3s though your home stereo but also provides on screen display of the IPOD's music navigation system on your television via a wireless remote. You will also be able to run a slide show of any photos stored on your IPOD via SVideo cable on your television http://www.dlo.com/products/homedoc_dx_Prod.tpl?command=showpage&cart=1136898669418849 A 60GB IPOD is now on the top of my list for MP3 server, replacing a $2000 Yamaha Multicast Server.
