CaptnBob
While cleaning up a few things, I ran across a Signet cartridge. Anybody know anything about the line? I've checked the usual suspects (Needle Doctor and so on) with no luck. Now, if I could only find a new stylus for my Grace F-9e ...
leok
I had a Signet cartridge years ago (as in 25 years ago). I think it was a brand name of Audio-Technica. I remember its not being particularly special compared with Shure, Pickering of similar price. But, that was when I was using some pretty unpleasant ss amplification so everything sounded equally unpleasant. I thought, since all amplifiers are equally perfect then the problem must be the cartridge. It only took me 20 years to figure that one out. Al Klappenberger
Bob, Yes, I have a Signet cartridge right now. I don't use it very much since I got into CD. It's a moving coil type. I still hae the speck sheets on it someplace. If you want I could scan it. What model is it? Al K.
www.records
Here is a cartridge database started last year by Ed on the AudioAsylum. It isn't complete, but I can't imagine the amount of effort one man has put into this site. If you enjoy vinyl, it's definately worth putting in your favorites. http://www.cartridgedb.com/ Steve
jeffgeorge
I have a Signet TK9lca and it is very nice. It is a MM from around '83, but still works great. I don't think replacement stili are available anymore though.
Seadog
Signet was the top-of-the line for Audio-Technica IIRC. They typically sold for nearly half again more than the comparable Audio-Technica cartridge with the same specs (at least that was my experience in 1985 shopping for a cartridge). jt1stcav
Back in '79 my dad bought a Signet TK7E MM cartridge for his Technics SL-1700MK2 'table (and stopped using it when he moved to CT in '99). In 2004 when my brother bought a new Music Hall mmf-5, he replaced the stock Goldring with various cartridges from Linn, Sumiko, Adcom, Pickering, Stanton, and Shure. This old Signet with its original stylus sounded almost as spectacular as his new Shure M97x(?)! If both the Signet and its stylus weren't discontinued many years before, he would've bought a replacement stylus for the TK7E and continued using it today it sounded that damn good![]
