DimaK
Hi there,i've posted this message in 2-channel forum. this forum is more apropritae - so i post it also here............recently i've got a pair of Lascalas.Have not idea what year they were made at but they have this round elements - i guess Alnico.they sound pretty impressive but it seems to me that the tweeter is a real week part.what replecement tweeter is recomended?i really like ribbon tweeters - is there such atweeter that fits good to lascala?current tweeters are working but i just feel that their quality isn't on par with modern tweeters.i mean that with a good modern tweeter you can get a better HF extention, more air, etc. i guess that some fostex or alike can be OK. i laso saw that there is JBL 2404 (i hope i get the model right) has the same 104db sensitivity - perhaps this one is good? p.s. later i will have some more questions regarding bracing of the box and amp (currenntly have conrad johnson mv-60se). DimaK
yea, i've read that - sounds like a good option. what about others? 2404? fostex's? ribbons?
J.4knee
Another option you may want to consider are the Beyma CP 25's: http://www.usspeaker.com/beyma%20CP25-1.htm
DRBILL
You might want to start with your crossover. That cures a lot of tweeter problems in Klipsch gear. BEC has some new tweeters that get sterling reviews. He is on the forum. DRBILL
DimaK
what the "bleep" is Beyma? ;-) xover......... i see that there are a lot of options. which one is the most transparent and musical?
Al Klappenberger
DimaK, Beyma is a manufacturer of speaker driver located in Madrid Spain. The CP25 is a very good tweeter. I use them myself, but they will not fit in any stock Klipsch speakers. They require a much larger hole than the K77. The round K77 (AlNiCo) is a less efficient tweeter than the later square magnet version (K77M). The old caps in your crossover are absorbing some of your highs too. The "AA" network is also a trebble waster to begin with. The only drop-in upgraed for the K77 that I know iof will soon be available from Bob Crites (BEC). Al k. J.4knee
And Al's Universal replacements or his ESN crossovers will surely abate that crossover cap issue also. I use the Universal replacements and love em.
JohnA
Your old K-77 tweeters don't perform all that well. They have 3 basic problems. One is they usually struggle to get up to 15k. Many can't get that high. The newer K-77-M performs a little better. Second, though the tweeters carry a 105 dB/W/M rating, the Type AA network you surely have drains 2.5 to 3 dB of that. Finally, the tweeter fires through a hole. If you will buy some "Z-brackets" from Klipsch and enlarge the hole, you can flush mount the tweeters and remove a great deal of harshness caused by reflections and diffractions from the hole. Sometime soon, Bob Crites will have a set of replacement tweeters available that should be flatter adn more extended than even the beat K-77. They will fit the same way and the K-77s do.
