Mr Tech
Hello fellow KlipschHeads! This is my first post, so an intro, and a little about me first, and then my question. My name is Wade Anderson.I am new to the Klipsch forum, but far from new to Klipschspeakers.I bought my first Klipsch speakers in 1974, new Cornwall'sBR. []I finished them myself and loved them for many years.About 3-4 years ago I sold them to Mitja Borko in Slovenia. []Some of you may remember him from the extensive technicalKlipsch Cornwall report he wrote several years ago for the BelgianAudiophileSchool. (still on the internet)I then immediately replaced them with a beautiful set of 1976 Cornwall'sWO. [] Anyway, I recently purchased a beautiful set of 1995 KHornsOO. []I've dreamed of owning a set of KHorns since I was 10 yearsold (42 years ago).I am in the middle of building false corners for them right now, which I willshare details & pics on the forum later when I'm done. Here's my question: Does anyone have any experience with upgrading the K-33woofer in the KHorn to a K-45 or K-48? I have recently aquired 2 brand new K-48's, which are actually JBL 2226H's,but haven't installed them yet.I believe these are the woofers they use in the pro-jubilee's ? Does anybody know how much of an improvement these will beover the standard K-33's? Thanks
Frzninvt
I believe the K-48 was used in the original Klipsch Chorus cabinet as well as some of the Pro cabintets, neither the K-48 or K-45 are a good option for the Klipschorn bass bin. The best woofer is still the K-33E, if you want higher power handling at the expense of some loss on the low end use a K-43E. Other options that have been used before but are not necessarily better: Jensen P15LL EV 15WK Stephens TruSonic T103? The best thing that you can do for those '95's is upgrade the capacitors and coils in the AK-3 networks it will yield far more improvment than swapping woofer's out. You will need 2 - 5mh coils (midrange circuit) 2 - 13uf caps (midrange circuit) 6 - 2uf caps (tweeter circuit) 2 - 100uf caps or 4 - 50uf caps (woofer circuit inside the bass bin) AudioCap Theta's and Kimber Kaps yield great results. DrWho
I have recently aquired 2 brand new K-48's, which are actually JBL 2226H's, but haven't installed them yet. I believe these are the woofers they use in the pro-jubilee's? Ummm....where did you hear the the K-48 = the JBL2226H? I actually own both drivers and though I've never had them directly side by side, I am pretty sure they're not the same driver (despite the similar appearances). Maybe I'll take some pics sometime of them outta their cabinets. Anyways, the K-33 is really the best woofer to put into your khorns. But since you already have the new woofers you might as well try them out. I would anticipate much less LF extension.
D-MAN
JBL 2226's will need a 6x13" throat cavity opening. The stock Khorn narrow 3x13" opening is specific to the K33E. The crossover will also be effected (the K33E is 4 Ohms) in a driver change. DM
Mr Tech
Dr Who, I bought these K-48's off ebay. The guy originally had 9 of them, all new. I think he has 3 left. Some of them came in original Klipsch boxes and some in JBL2226H boxes. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5876757727&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 I think there was a slight difference in the vent on the back of the driver between the two. DrWho
The JBL woofers will have 3 vents on the rear with a metal screen covering the holes and the diaphragm will be a much lighter almost grey color. And then there will be a gasket material on the front that is 4 pieces of rubber glued on...the K-48 is a darker black and the gasket is a single large piece. The 2226H has a pretty distinct sticker on the back of the woofer that can't come off unless the vent screens came off too. Sounds to me like the dude just shipped them in JBL boxes....the two drivers are in no way related. The K-48 was crafted by eminence....doesn't JBL use celestion for their drivers? I forget. Cut-Throat
I bough t my Khorns from a 'nut' that was driving them with 200 watt push pull amplifiers. He had blown the fuses that were in the Bass Bin, he put in bigger fuses until he blew the K33 Woofers. He then replaced the K33's with the K48's. He let me hear the Khorns at his home before I bought them. He demoed some 'music' for me and turned up the Bass so that I could hear the glass panes of the China Cabinets rattling over the speakers. I was not going to use the Midrange and I made sure the tweeters were not blown. The wood was in great shape, so I bought them. I did not know that they had K48s until I got them home and yanked the AK-3 crossover out and replaced it with a Type 'A'. They sounded OK, but I contacted Klipsch and they told me that they would not have as good as Bass Response as the K33E's (They would just handle more power!). So I replaced them with a pair of K33E's from Bob Crites and sold the K48's on E-bay. Amost an even swap. Don't bother going down this road.
