Lone Star Bottleheads Meeting Pictures

Oddly enough, I didn't see any Klipsch of any kind there.

However, I am very interested to see what you all had to say about the Bose 901's compared to the other speakers in the room. Who's were those anyway? (I'll understand if you rather not say) [;)]

Looked like a nice gathering. Lots of neat equipment too!

Actually we didn't listen to the 901's. They were just a static

display. They were given to me a few years ago all beat up and with the

foam surrounds gone. I replaced the surrounds with the newer cloth

ones, refinished the cabinets and used them in my office at work for a

couple years. I brought them home when I picked up some JBL L36's for

my office. I haven't used the 901's since. I will say they are very

efficient and do well for background music (at least they did in my

office).

As for why no Klipsch, the Cornwalls that were in the living room were

replaced witht the DIY horns. The Cornwalls are now at Fred's in

Houston. He is in the process of refinishing them. He already has them

stripped and is filling imperfections before staining.

All the other speakers did well with tubes. In the living room, the DIY

horns took anything we threw at them. In the den, Fred's DIY speakers

sounded very nice and had good bass for a 8" woofer. The JBL L26's were

more efficient than I had expected and sounded great with the little

2A3 with about 3 watts. While not at this meet I do know the Martin

Logan CLS need more power and do well with the Shanling SP-80's with 50

watts a side.

Luther,

Thanks for all of the hospitality, and to your lovely wife Rose for putting up with us. I really enjoyed seeing and listening to all of that DIY stuff. What I enjoyed the most was hearing some of my vinyl on your TT and doing an A/B of I Robot with my Import from Japan and your UHQR. That is quite the set up.

It was great to also meet a fellow Austinite (John) and I hope he brings that 300B rig with the Western Electric tubes to the Texas Gathering.

Thanks again,

Travis

Travis, the pleasure was all mine. Part of the joy of this hobby,

dare I say obsession, is to share it with like minded friends. As you

could tell from my living room, vinyl is an important part of my music

enjoyment. I never try to sway anyone to vinyl, cd or whatever source

material they like, but rather just love finding other vinyl addicts to

compare notes and vinyl with. I find more new, at least to me, albums

that way. If you would like to replicate the I Robot A/B at your

Klipsch meet, I would be more than happy to bring the UHQR along. I

have also decided to not only bring the little Bottlehead S.E.X. amp

but my custom one off DIY 2A3 stereo amp.

John is really a great guy and I'm honored to call him friend. He

was my mentor on my DIY Loftin-White 2A3 amp project. I know you will

enjoy getting to know him, now that he has returned from his cycling

trip around the world with his family. He truely is an exceptional

human being and one of the most intelligent people I know. That and he

is just plain old good people.

Hi Luther,

I can theoretically appreciate your love of vinyl and its purity as a prefered source along with its associated hardware being a tremendous lure for the audiophile hobbyist further up the chain of investment in our mutual enjoyment, in terms of the love of musical reproduction at home. Having said that, I am still wondering even more so, given your purist preferances, your opinion of the Squeezebox as a source (in my application, for both convince and cost) if it was droped into any of the reproduction hardware auditioned durring your LSB get together. I especially would be interested of its use and of course, more importantly, the quality of sound when fronting some low watage tubes with higher efficient speakers as were available durring the LSB meeting. Perhaps a simple 1-10 scale would suffice when compared to some other referance present at the meeting.

I would appreciate any thoughts you might like to share allong these lines sir.

Sincere thanks for your time, should you decide to ponder this line of my curiosity, and write your opinions and or, those overheard at the meeting .

Thanks, in advance,

Bill

Bill, while I really like vinyl, I wouldn't call myself a purist. I

enjoy music in all it's many forms; from vinyl to iPod, I own them all.

Now this was my first listen to the Squeezbox specific. I really can't

tell the difference in the actual CD and the hard drive version, as

least not in the loss less compression stuff we were listening to. Take

that, the ease of use and convenience and it's a hard thing to beat. I

was working on a DIY music server and may now just buy the Sqeezebox

instead (less work and about the same money). Am I going to give up on

vinyl? No chance of that happening. It may be pschyco-acoustics but

vinyl is still my source for critical listening. All the others are a

nice way to have music playing all the time in the background. I have

the music playing in my office 9 hours a day.
