SACD Setup Question

So, I just realized that my DVD/CD player is SACD compatible, and that I have some SACD's.

I threw in a Sam Cooke SACD, and played it. However, my question, is this:

It plays, regardless of what type of output I pick on my receiver.

Meaning, if I pick, Dolby, DTS, Stereo, Analog, Direct, Stereo 5.1,

Whatever, it plays. And sounds differently, in each mode. When I use

the onscreen input/output feature, it shows the input as being PCM, but

I thought I understood SACD's to NOT use PCM??

What is the intended mode for SACDs??

It is a Sony CD/SACD/DVD player, hooked up via Monster THX coaxial digital audio cable, to a Denon AVR2105 Receiver...

If you need more info to answer my question, lemme know. It doesn't

sound to impressive, to me, at this point, but, I don't have a non SACD

version of any of my SACDs, so it's impossible for me to make an

immediate and definitive comparison.

Thanks in advance!

actually, I take everything back. The only way I can get sound to come

out of my speakers, when playing an SACD, is to set it to normal CD.

If I set it to SACD, on my Sony player, then the time goes, and tracks

go by, like its playing, but no sound comes out of my speakers. I have

no idea what's going on...

I looked around the web, and these forums, and can't find any help... any clues?

Hi there.

Do you have 6 analog outputs on the DVD player, and 6 analog inputs on the receiver? If you do, you will need to purchase 6 rca cables and hook them up. Then set the receiver to play 6 channel analog (6 channel input, or whatever the setting is called on your model.) If you don't have 6 channel inputs on the back of your receiver....ya can't play SACD/DVD-A.

Most of the current players which play SACD and DVD-A will only allow in analog output for the sound which you will need 6 RCA cable to connect to your reciever.

Solution can be getting 6 RCA cables if you already have them or get the new Oppo 970 player which allows SACDs to be sent through HDMI since the cost of 3pairs of average RCA cables would cost about the same.

Many SACDs are actually multi-layer discs and have a two channel CD layer and a 5.1 channel Multi-channel. Mike is right, you need to run 6 analog RCA cables to the "multi-channel In" of your receiver. Then press the "multi-channel in" button on your receiver.

Do that and it will probably work fine.

It'll sound good too. I love my SACDs.

Be aware, not all SACDs are multi-channel. Many SACDs are simply high definition music, and not 5.1. Some SACDs are even (heaven forbid) mono. So beware before you buy, don't assume SACD equates to 5.1, it doesn't.

Roger that, everyone!! I had 6 cables laying around (more like 4

million, go figure), plugged them in, hooked it all up, set it to Multi

Channel SACD, set the receiver, plugged in a multi channel SACD, and

sat back, and enjoyed.

Thanks a ton!!!

THE SOUND IS MAGNIFICENT!!

I would like to reccommend Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon!!!

It is mind blowing on my stereo, which isn't too expensive, so, I

imagine, on a wicked system, that it could be orgasmic.

again, thanks!

have it set on the Receiver as 6 channel and the direct hook ups on the back from player to receiver, should be 6 inputs, "if" not using a subwoofer make sure it's turned off in system setup, I have seen that before, honest, and NO sound....If it's hooked up right, DVD Audio and SACD Multi and 2 channel are remarkable on a good system IMO. Regardless of the 2 channel freaks, and I'm one with turntables, Reel to Reel, Cassette, the clarity and richness in sound quality is incredible.

In fact as I type this I am listening to DVD Audio...in OPERA...by a beautiful woman from Italy and remarkable singer named Cecilia Bartoli, called The Visaldi Album...check this one out ....
