Kriton
Has anyone seen this flick? I started it and got a good portion of the way through it, but since I was watching with my MOTHER, I had to trun it off...she thought is was too "gross and disturbing" Have any of you developed an opinion on this one? Just curious - while I think Depp is a nimrod, I beleive he is still one of the best actors of this generation, what do yall think? Moderators Amy Posted August 22, 2006 Moderators Share Posted August 22, 2006 I'm a big Depp fan...watched the first 10 minutes and fell asleep, never did bring myself to watch the rest. I returned it. A co-worker said she really liked it, but I can't give you much of an opinion myself. Let me know what you think--I may try again! oldbuckster
I have to agree with Kriton on Johnny Depp...........Nimrod.....that's good.......Donny Brasco, Blow ,good movies..........I just feel that Johnny hasn't done THAT role yet, his best effort is yet to come.............. Moderators Amy Posted August 23, 2006 Moderators Share Posted August 23, 2006 I thought he was outstanding in Fear and Loathing... Gilbert Grape, Edward Scissorhands, Don Juan Demarco, Benny & Joon, Sleepy Hollow, Secret Window, Finding Neverland, and of course Pirates... he's almost always solid. But yes, I agree the best is yet to come. I don't know about the nimrod thing. Eccentric, yeah, I'd say so. Non-conformist? Definitely. A little too grungy? You bet! But even I like to go to the grocery store in my slippers every now and then []

All those others you mentioned were good but lacking something.......Pirates, he does the best Keith Richards impersonation I've ever seen, but I just don't care for that style of movie..............Wonka, Tim Burton movies are a little on the darkside for me.......Johnny has the talent, I just don't feel his Big Time role has come around yet, but when it does, the Sky's the limit............On the other hand, may I expect too much from these actors.......I think not................You don't really go to the Grocery store in your slippers, do you? Moderators Amy Posted August 23, 2006 Moderators Share Posted August 23, 2006 I don't consider any of those movies great...I just think he really carried them and made them more than just watchable. That's why he's a great actor. I have been known to, yes []

I have been known to, yes [] Shame on you..........maybe you can remember, didn't Johnny do a movie about his daughter being kidnapped, and he was to shoot a female politican, or they would kill his daughter...........I think Christoper Walken was the bad guy, imagine that..........Cannot think of the name of that movie........it was pretty good...........His big role will come....... Kriton
Respectful of Hunter Thompson? I mean, I love the "gonzo journalism" thing, and I find his writing to be painfully direct, historically important and disturbingly hilarious ("As your attorney, I must advise you to take as many drugs as possible") - but he was a tortured suicidal nihilistic amoral walking coma - Where the Buffalo Roam is just plain fantastic, though...Kind of like appreciating Dharma Bums with really liking Kerouac very much...I idolize the writing, but I would not have been to happy to be related to him. Remember too that I beleive it was Depp who threw a major private send off bash for HT, and was in contact with him for the making of F&L...I am just glad that he is at peace, the peace that he was not able to obtain with drugs and booze. Don't get me wrong, I think Depp's acting is superb, loved F&L, he was brilliant in Benny and Joon, I rather liked him in "From Hell" - he is NOT the same person in every movie, like say Julia Roberts, who is always Julia Roberts whether she is in 17 century England, a hooker in Hollywood, running away from her wedding, or making pizzas on the east coast. I just don't care for his political views and the clear loathing he has demonstrated for the United States (even though it was we who made him who he was). There are a lot of things wrong here, yes, but stay and fix don't leave and pontificate. With Downey Jr. and Edward Norton, I think Depp is one of the best of the younger players, just waiting for the right script... K
oldbuckster
Kriton, first off, didn't you just have a baby born into your family? I think I remember that, Congrats, really, Best wishes on your new journey...............I just feel there was a little more to Hunter than what was shown in that movie, that's all, that brillant writing skill was honed somewhere, and I felt it was passed over, and there also a serious side hidden in all the craziness that was never shown, just my take on it, doesn't mean I'm right. I am well aware of his public image, I just think there was more to the man than that.
Kriton
OB, yes, I just had a daughter (2 months old, so just is merely in my screwed up time frame), and thank you for your well wishes. She is already a pip, and I expected no less. Agreed, one of these days when HT's death is not so recent and the wounds have healed someone will have to do a real biography of the man, I agreed that it had to come from somewhere, but a lot of the folks that knew HT said that he really was like the man in F&L... Just finished the Libertine, seems I was closer to the end than I thought...hmmm...a rather strange and disconcerted ending. Syphilitic, he really doesn't have the redemption that I thought he would have, no revelation, no repentance. He does a good thing for the king, but it is really for himself, and dies with his ever loving wife that he has so cruelly mistreated and nothing else. Movie made me want to shower...harkens back to "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover" - nobody is innocent, nobody wins, all is *&^%, and the world spins on... Excellently acted, pretty amazing acting I thought from the whole cast. An exercise in shock theater...good for a first watch, but not on my list for a second any time soon. From Hell and The Ninth Gate are not far behind. He's just enjoyable to watch.
Moderators Amy Posted August 29, 2006 Moderators Share Posted August 29, 2006 I caught parts of Secret Window on TV last night....the scene in the office where they are going over the list of household items potentially damaged in the fire was great...the interaction between his character and Timothy Hutton is classic. As an actor, he juggles between subtlety and completely over the top very well--knows exactly which to use where.
oldtimer
Re: Depp. Definitely Bennie and Joon, Edward Scissorhands, Once upon a Time in Mexico(are you a mexican, or a mexican't?), even Donny Brasco. Also From Hell. Amy, do you mean house slippers or Hawaiian style(flip flops)? Surfahs are just about all I wear on my feet in the summer(a brand of flip flops). I have this image of Amy in bunny slippers at the grocery store right now, and wanting to be there with a camera.....
Moderators Amy Posted September 5, 2006 Moderators Share Posted September 5, 2006 LOL, sorry, no bunny slippers. I had some of those back in high school though. No, my slippers sort of look like clog sandals, but fluffy [] I used to go to some of my early college classes in my flannel pj pants, t-shirt, and isotoner slippers, too. I'm a comfort gal. I'm sorry, how did we go from The Libertine to slippers again? []
