PhilH Posted February 23, 2001 Share Posted February 23, 2001 When the govt' set the rules for HDTV, it was chosen from several system proposals from different groups in the industry, headed by organizations such as Zenith, the Sarnoff labs, etc. When it was chosen, the sound was actually worded to be "AC-3" which is Dolby Digital today. boa12 Posted February 23, 2001 Share Posted February 23, 2001 ac-3 is really a noise reduction technology (according to dolby), but i guess since it automatically comes w/ dolby digital the 2 terms have become interchangeable. so i hope the fcc takes ac-3 to mean dolby digital 5.1. Lone Palm Posted February 25, 2001 Share Posted February 25, 2001 I have Dish Network.I beleive you must have The Dish500 receiver to get 5.1. Otherwise it is Dolby Surround or Pro Logic.
