ReefWreak Posted March 16, 2007 Share Posted March 16, 2007 Hi, I'm a beginning audiophile, and got a great deal on an Open Box deal at BB (Yes, terrible way to start the introduction; recipe for failure...). Tell me what everyone thinks of my setup: Yamaha HTR-5890 Receiver (open box, got it for $180 after bestbuy giftcard) Klipsch RB-61s for front stereo speakers (all I could afford/fit into my dorm room, should be plenty of sound) Audio is coming from a PS3 through component cables (I havn't added optical/TOSlink because I've heard the experience won't be any better since I don't have more than 2.0 sound) The most disappointing part is that the PS3 will only play SACDs through HDMI which the receiver does not have, but it's by no means the end of the world, and they may eventually change that with a firmware update or something. What I gather from what others say on AVS forum is that this will be a very bright sounding combination, but A. I don't care, because it's what I can afford, and it's the best (I believe) that I could afford at the time, and B. Most if not all non-audiphiles appriciate a brighter sound than they do a darker sound, and maybe prefer it over an even sound as well. Thanks for reading and for any following opinions! I do not know the equipment you have, but wanted to comment on your last paragraph. A TRUE (ok, IMHO) audiophile is looking for ACCURATE sound. If the recording is bright, it should sound bright, if dark, it should sound dark. When we speak of coloration, such as the warmth of tubes, we are talking about things the average non-fanatic listener will probably neither ever hear or care about that are very, very slight. When such things are beyond slight, they represent inaccuracy. The big K-horns are renowned as being "merciless" and "unforgiving." Give them awful material, and they make awful sounds. I look forward to hearing the differences in speakers vs. reality, because in HS I was a musician and performed more than I care to think about in both jazz/swing/rock bands in a classical orchestra setting. I'm glad that it sounds like I'm off to a good start. I actually first bought a pair of B-2s from BB, but decided that it was worth the extra $$$ to go Reference. My next step is deciding whether to save up for a sub (Which I bought a sub-12 and returned it, being too much $$$ and way too big for my current setup, maybe i'll get one later down the road) or a center channel speaker (matching RC-52). For those who suggest that this hobby is a money pit with an endless series of constant upgrades, apparently you've never stepped into the world of saltwater aquariums. I started with a $300 tank, figuring $100 here, $200 there, and that would be it. $2k later, and I'm still only starting..... Islander Posted March 16, 2007 Share Posted March 16, 2007 Actually, if you're already thinking of upgrading, you don't need to keep all your components comparable, price-wise. If you get an opportunity to pick up something that's a level above the rest of your system, don't say no, just upgrade everything else when the time comes. Upgrading in a few big jumps is less costly than upgrading in a lot of little jumps. At the same time, it's about the music, not the hardware.
