Well first of all it's heavier then I expected. The gold face plate is stunning. I'm using it with my Forte Is and during some preliminary listening it sounds great. A lush rich midrange and precise treble. The bass is controlled and not flabby. Next few days I'll be listening to some of my reference cd's to put it through it's paces.

The 12ax7's need replacement as all the other tubes are new. Any recommendations for current production 12x7s,

Thanks

Larry

That's right. The 12ax7's are probably just fine, they don't seem to wear out often. What brand are they? If you're looking for a good new tube, the Sovtek 12ax7LPS is very good. At only $11 a tube, they're easy to try out. You'll quickly find out if your old tubes are still good.

I can't tell what kind they are as all the lettering is worn off. I have an amp thar uses 6992 and I thought they were expensicve as nos but wow 12xa7's are in another realm. I was thinking pf these as nos http://www.tubedepot.com/nos-12ax7wa-jansyl.html or some of the tong sols http://www.tubedepot.com/ts-12ax7g.html.. I need 4 of them so the price can get up there.

THANKS

You only need 4 of them if you plan on using the phono imputs. If you are not going to use the phono imputs, you only need to have one in the # 3 socket and one in the # 4 socket. You will however have to have 2 other ones in the # 1 and # 2 sockets, but they are only for the phono.

Larry flip the tube over and look inside the circle of the tube pins. If you see a diamond indentation you have Telefunkens and they are almost surely in fine condition. If they have no diamond hard to say what they are.
