tommyboy
Does anyone have one, and do you recommend it? I already have the 360. Thanks. And ladies, yes my wife wants one.[A]
erickoegle
I personally do not have one, a friend does. I've watched movies in it and they do look really nice. I am not sure if the HD drive for the 360 upconverts normal DVDs to 720p, I doubt it does. Also no HDMI for it. Plus with the new xbox 360 'Elite' it does not support HDMI 1.3, so no DD+. I think it is worth it for the price. Although at Circuit City this week You can get a Toshiba HDA2 it is $400.00 plus 50$ MIR through toshiba http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Toshiba-HD-DVD-Player-HDA2/sem/rpsm/oid/169466/catOid/-12872/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do 50$ MIR form: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Toshiba-HD-DVD-Player-HDA2/sem/rpsm/oid/169466/catOid/-12872/rpem/ccd/RebateDetails.do?oid=178034 5 Free HD DVDs by mail form: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Toshiba-HD-DVD-Player-HDA2/sem/rpsm/oid/169466/catOid/-12872/rpem/ccd/RebateDetails.do?oid=177362 Plus you get 4 free HD DVDs movies for purchase of an HD drive this week. Me Loves Khorns
I got one and love it. Not expensive compared to stand alone players. My HDTV came out just before HDMI, so running component video outs doesn't bother me at all The picture truly is amazing. Paul
Professor.Ham.Slap
I also am going to suggest you get the HD-A2 from Circuit City or Best Buy (you'll just have to do a competitor match and they'll hook you up). You'll get 4 free movies in store plus you can print out the mail in rebate form for 5 more free HD DVD's at www.thelookandsoundofperfect.com (pops in new window). I just took advantage of it and man it is one heck of a sweet deal. Also, for the free HD DVD's I'm going to suggest you get all the movies that you want that are combo format discs (HD DVD and DVD on one disc) as they generally seem to be about $5 more expensive. tommyboy
I guess what I mean is can I use the optical audio wire I already have for my current DVD Player, or would I need to buy something else?
el jopez
Fiber optic will not transmit HD audio signals, it doesn't have the bandwidth. You will need either an HDMI cord or 6 analog cords which will transmit PCM signals to your receiver.
ARPRINCE
I don't have an HD DVD yet but I know it does not UPCONVERT on component but does using VGA. Unlike Blu-Ray, I don't know of any HD DVD movies that carry Uncompressed PCM audio (maybe the new releases?). Also, optical cables do carry UPCM but not the whole channels. For example using a PS3, if you specify you want to listed to 5.1 UPCM audio and you are using optical out, it comes out in stereo only. No need to buy. What you already have would work.

For example using a PS3, if you specify you want to listed to 5.1 UPCM audio and you are using optical out, it comes out in stereo only. None of them have uncompressed PCM, but many have the lossless Dolby TruHD and DTS HD tracks which are as good as uncompressed PCM. So basically it doesn't really matter one way or the other. The standalone player transmits these as PCM so long as you have HDMI.
