christjared
I was thinking about buying the Dayton Audio 15" powered subwoofer kit from partsexpress.com. It is selling for 249.00. I was just wondering opinions on this subwoofer kit, or are there other alternatives that would be better for around $300. This sub would be playing in a room about 15x20, but the walls are very thin and let alot of sound through. I will have this sub hooked up to my HK 3480 and pair of KG4's. Thanks for any input or ways I could improve the question. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-770 JC
DrWho
A while back I led a subwoofer workshop where we got some good deals and put together some killer subs for $300. We have an extra kit leftover that we need to sell so if you're interested let me know. I can't sell it for less than $300, but if you're in the area the shipping shouldn't be a big deal (and you can hear it for yourself too). I'm fairly certain it will outperform the stock Dayton kits since they were an option when I was choosing a design for the workshop. I'm outta town at the moment, but I can run some numbers for you when I get back if you're interested in seeing some comparisons. The DIY subwoofer market hasn't changed much since I went through the design process so you might find this thread helpful: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/4/717845/ShowThread.aspx Page 1 was some of the original thinking, but on pages 3 and 4 you'll find more of the design concept and more relevant predictions. The final design actually ended up a bit bigger, so the predictions aren't perfect. Besides, I've got measurements of the actual acoustic output which makes the predictions rather meaningless (except to note the great correlation). Currently Ascendant Audio is going through some transitionary stages so if you wanted to purchase the parts yourself, or do something similar on your own, then you might consider some of the drivers from TC Sounds. The db-500 should be a drop-in replacement yielding the same performance for $20 more than we paid for the Assassin 12": http://www.tcsounds.com/db500.htm Hope this helps and let me know if you're interested in the kit or have any other questions, etc etc... christjared
That might work for me in awhile. I am not in the area of IL, but close by, being IA. I found a sub listed on Craigslist. The seller doesn't want much for it, said it was all computer designed by a friend. The amp is an Apex Junior, which isn't very powerful. The seller doesn't remember what the woofer was in the enclosure, and has no time to rip it apart. Here is the link, It looks very well made, but I would have to see up close to tell. What are everyones opinions on this one? I should be able to pick it up sometime this week, I hope!! http://iowacity.craigslist.org/ele/337466200.html JC

christjared
Good point, but the drive is 4 hours away, and it doesnt work out with my work schedule, and weekends are pretty full. So I might just have to compromise and say to hell with work for a few hours and go down there. We will have to see, I will post more on here when I have the sub in my hands. zuzu
Cheaper to buy it than drive 4 hours each way and miss work. Not as much fun tho.
